Gucci is one of the world's most famous and fashion labels. Its iconic 'Flora' print and bamboo handle bags are coveted by royalty, celebrities and fashion lovers alike.
The Italian brand has been a source of inspiration for rappers and hip-hop artists who have incorporated its bold style into their songs. Below, we take a look at some of the key designers behind the label's success.
Aldo
Aldo was the eldest son of Guccio and Aida Gucci, and he was instrumental in the success of the Italian fashion house that bears his family name. A businessman with a strong sense of tradition, Aldo took over the company from his father in 1921 and expanded the brand into a global empire.
He was also an early pioneer of the double-G logo, which transposed his father's initials onto handbags and shoes, beginning the company's shift into a consumer-driven fashion system. His initials have become an iconic symbol of the label that can be seen across all its products, establishing the Gucci family's legacy in fashion and the world.
When his father died in 1938, he became co-owner of the brand with his brothers. But it was only when he moved the family's main workshop and store from Florence to Rome in 1939 that Aldo began to realize that the company would never become an international powerhouse without meeting customers where they were. He opened stores in New York City, Paris, Tokyo, Hong Kong and other cities, proving that the brand had enough clientele to be successful in all parts of the globe.
Rodolfo
Rodolfo Gucci was the youngest son of the founder of the eponymous luxury brand. He became a film actor before joining the family business.
When he died in 1983, his son Maurizio inherited his share of the company. He went on to manipulate his uncle and cousins to take control of the company, but his management and extravagant spending led the business into financial trouble.
In the movie House of Gucci, Jeremy Irons plays Rodolfo. In the movie, he's not simply part of the Gucci family, but he's also an actor, and he's trying to make a movie for his son.
He's not a good person to be around, especially when he's getting a divorce from his wife. Patrizia tried to convince him that he could be a great father, but he refused. He eventually walked out on her. Then he sent a friend to tell her that he didn't want to be married anymore.
Maurizio
Maurizio Gucci, played by Adam Driver, grew up in a world of luxury and was raised to take over the family business. He was also married to a socialite named PatriziaReggiani, whose wealth made her one of the richest women in Italy.
Upon his father Rodolfo’s death in 1983, Maurizio gained a majority stake in Gucci, becoming its chairman. But he soon began to spend his fortune recklessly. He was accumulating millions in personal debt, and faced bankruptcy.
Then he was gunned down by his ex-wife, PatriziaReggiani. Despite their divorce settlement, Reggiani was still extremely resentful of her husband.
As part of her revenge, Reggiani hired psychic Pina Auriemma to hire assassins to kill Maurizio. She and her friend Pina were later convicted of his murder.
Eventually Domenico De Sole, Tom Ford, and Nemiroff tried to buy Maurizio’s shares of Gucci for $150 million. They were able to regain control of the company. It was during this time that Gucci re-emerged as one of the top fashion houses in the world.
Alessandro Michele
Michele, who was promoted to Gucci's creative director in 2015, took the brand into a new direction with his gender fluid and maximalist aesthetic. He made a bold break from Tom Ford, who had saved the luxury house with a sleek and provocative rebranding that juxtaposed glamor with highly suggestive imagery.
Until Michele's appointment, Gucci had been a minimalist, sophisticated brand that relied on leather goods and canvas bags as its main cash cows. Rather than sticking to the same aesthetic, Michele reimagined the brand’s iconic GG logo and accessories. He transformed clogs and horse-bit loafers into fur-lined slippers and logo bags into hand-painted or embroidered motifs, further reinforcing Gucci's position as an iconic luxury brand.
Since becoming Gucci's chief designer, Michele has taken a number of bold steps to transform the brand into a sustainable powerhouse. He has eliminated the use of fur in its collections and pledged to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions by 2025. He has also cut down on shows and has embraced a seasonless approach to fashion.
